From Photos to Pages: Our Design Process Explained

By The Mementales Team

Design is the invisible architecture of a story. Here is how we turn a folder of memories into a book that works.

There is a version of a memory book that is simply photographs on pages, chronologically ordered, with dates underneath. It is functional and it is forgettable. Our design process exists to make something better.

Starting With the Emotional Arc

Before we design a single page, we think about the emotional experience of reading the book from cover to cover. What should the reader feel at the beginning? In the middle? At the final page? This arc guides every subsequent decision.

Typography as Character

We select typography that matches the emotional register of each story. A book about a grandfather's wartime service calls for a different typographic voice than a book about a child's first year. The typeface is not decoration; it is tone.

The Use of White Space

Amateur layouts fear white space. Good design uses it deliberately. A single powerful photograph, given room to breathe, communicates more than a grid of eight images fighting for attention.

Colour as Narrative Tool

We build a custom colour palette for each book, drawing from the dominant tones of the photographs and the emotional character of the story. A warmer palette for a love story; a cooler, more contemplative palette for a legacy document.

Design is not what a book looks like. Design is what a book feels like.
